I am also immensely grateful to Manning Burns for his tremendous efforts of documenting and producing local artists on the Stereotrash Records label. JayhawkFestCompendium

L-R: Troub Stone, Baz Shaw, Corey Alan Rose, Sonny (the cat), James Durham, Mullins (pic by Stu. Thanks!)

You’d be hard pressed to convince me that we didn’t have a great time on this week’s episode of The Northwest Georgia Music Hour. I mean, Baz Shaw was here from the future! The outlaw arrived in time to tell us all about this Saturday’s Jayhawk Music & Arts Festival in Chickamauga. He also brought along members of the Corey Alan Rose band and we enjoyed some of their tunes live.

This was also my last show as host of The Northwest Georgia Music Hour. It has been an honor and a blessing to be able to share the talent of Northwest Georgia on the airwaves of 95.7 The Ridge. The weekly show will remain and Stu McFab will take the helm. I couldn’t think of a better host. He’s become one of my all-time best friends and is equally enthusiastic about the quality of music that represents this beautiful region. I will continue to consider myself part of the Davis family whether they like it or not. I love them with all my heart and appreciate the love that they have shown me over the years. I also tip my hat to Stephens’ Music Company who have sponsored the show for the entirety of it’s existence. That’s amazing! There’s no doubt about their investment in the local music community. I appreciate them beyond words.  Here’s what we heard this week.

L-R: Mullins, Liz Womble, Clay Broome, Steve Stewart (pic by Stu. Thanks!)

This week on The Northwest Georgia Music Hour we enjoyed a visit from Liz Womble. Liz performs regularly with the Georgia Mountain Music Club and also sings in a duo with Daniela Opravilova. She has been writing music since the 60’s and has always dreamed of recording an album. Fortunately she got connected with producer Ben McCree, who has made her dream a reality.  The album will be available soon but we served up some sneak peaks on the show. They’re great, and in a truly classic yet timeless country sound.

We also celebrated Clay Broome’s birthday today! We got to hang out with Clay and Steve Stewart, which is always a treat. It was great to find out what’s going on in Clay’s world, which we can usually only imagine. Here’s what we heard.

Clay Broome w/ Jessica Lynn – Paper of Pins
Tina & The Goose – Hurricane
The Rattlesnake Rattlers – Jerry the Junker
Milky Sway – Handsome One

It’s only been a few times over the last couple of years that I’ve visited with Woody Earwood, but it’s always been a treat. He’s laid back, easy to talk to, and passionate about his music. All of these qualities make for a great time on the Northwest Georgia Music Hour. Woody has been writing a lot recently and we enjoyed listening to some fresh tunes performed live on the air.

We also visited with Dani Cochran who organized the Led Zeppelin Tribute Benefit Concert for Heroes Great and Small. The event is packed with local artists and is scheduled for this Saturday in the Schroeder’s Courtyard. More information is available on MullinsMania.com. Here’s what we heard this week.

AvoidTheSpiralCompendium

L-R: Richard Couey, Matt Minter, Chase Cowan, Christian Blankenship (pic by Stu! Thanks!) *Bobby Ayers missed the photo but made it to the show.

Avoid the Spiral has participated in some great shows in the last couple of years. The last time I caught them was in the Schroeder’s Courtyard for the Turn Your Back on Hate’s Change Starts at Home concert in May. I knew that night that it was high time for them to join us on The Northwest Georgia Music Hour. This week we enjoyed some recordings from their upcoming album, Victim of Circumstance. Naturally, we convinced them to perform some of the tracks in a stripped-down acoustic fashion, and we loved it. Here’s what we heard.

Shane West – Daddy’s Guitar
Scott Thompson – Alone in Memphis
Blacklight Crush – Perfect Storm
Nosecone Prophets – C’est La Vie
Avoid the Spiral – Bare Knuckle
Avoid the Spiral – Autumn (live)

A visit with The Maddox Band

June 28, 2017
TheMaddoxBandCompendium1

Kate Lovely, Brandon Maddox, and Sonny the Cat. (photo by Elizabeth Davis. Thanks!)

I really enjoyed the few times that I’ve been able to catch Brandon Maddox perform around town. It was a no-brainer to me that we’d love to have him as a guest on The Northwest Georgia Music Hour. At the time, we had no idea that he’d be joined by Kate Lovely. Her addition really put the icing on the cake and we certainly enjoyed our first encounter with The Maddox Band. Brandon’s songs and guitar playing is outstanding and the duo’s harmonies are sweet and powerful. I must admit, I should have had the mics a little less hot. There’s some peaking on the performance but hey, it’s live radio and I get pretty caught up in the moment. It still sounds great to me. Here’s what we heard.

Gene Brigham – Free
Craig Conway – Move On
Tina & The Goose – Hurricane
South of Heaven – It Ain’t Mine
The Maddox Band – Neon’s Glow (live)
The Maddox Band – Kissin’ in the Rain (live)
The Maddox Band – Tennessee Street Party (live)
The Maddox Band – Living Reckless (live)
The Maddox Band – If We’re Gonna Leave (live)
