A visit with The Maddox Band

June 28, 2017
TheMaddoxBandCompendium1

Kate Lovely, Brandon Maddox, and Sonny the Cat. (photo by Elizabeth Davis. Thanks!)

I really enjoyed the few times that I’ve been able to catch Brandon Maddox perform around town. It was a no-brainer to me that we’d love to have him as a guest on The Northwest Georgia Music Hour. At the time, we had no idea that he’d be joined by Kate Lovely. Her addition really put the icing on the cake and we certainly enjoyed our first encounter with The Maddox Band. Brandon’s songs and guitar playing is outstanding and the duo’s harmonies are sweet and powerful. I must admit, I should have had the mics a little less hot. There’s some peaking on the performance but hey, it’s live radio and I get pretty caught up in the moment. It still sounds great to me. Here’s what we heard.

Gene Brigham – Free
Craig Conway – Move On
Tina & The Goose – Hurricane
South of Heaven – It Ain’t Mine
The Maddox Band – Neon’s Glow (live)
The Maddox Band – Kissin’ in the Rain (live)
The Maddox Band – Tennessee Street Party (live)
The Maddox Band – Living Reckless (live)
The Maddox Band – If We’re Gonna Leave (live)

A Solstice Celebration with the Stereotrash Summer Sampler, Vol. 2!

June 23, 2017

SUMMERSAMPLER17b

On what other radio station in the world would you get to hear the Stereotrash Records Summer Sampler, Vol. 2? That’s right. None of them! Only on 95.7 The Ridge’s The Northwest Georgia Music Hour could such fresh material be enjoyed. And what better day could that be heard than on the first day of summer? This is only one of many reasons that the future of music in Northwest Georgia is brighter than all get out and hotter than a brand from the headpiece to the staff of Ra. Here’s what we heard.

John Stone – Frozen Margaritas and Leftover Pizza
Ethos – Agnosia
David Bell – Next to Nothing
Boxwine & The Brewnettes – Summer Sandwiches
Cannon & The Boxes – More to Do
Graham & Vann – Elephant Shot Dead In the City
The Donors – Top Keeps Spinning
Tina & The Goose – Hurricane
Muletide Perkins – Cool, Dry Place
The Barbaric Yawps – Super Brain
The Kamikaze Dali – Mannequin Dance

The brand new Ethos album, Shade & Soil, will be released on Tuesday, June 20th. This week on The Northwest Georgia Music Hour we sampled a few selections and it’s safe to say that we’re pumped! We enjoyed our visit from Austen Earp and Tribb Robison of Ethos and we’re especially looking forward to the Shade & Soil Release Show, which takes place this Friday at Old Havana Cigar Co. in Rome. Also performing that evening are Tir Asleen, Men & Mountains, and Hey Chroma. Attendees will have the first opportunity to get a physical copy of Shade & Soil, which we highly recommend. Here’s what we heard.

J. Scott Thompson – Alone in Memphis
The Kamikaze Dali – The Lion Song
Chris Weinholtz – Empty Pockets
Jason L. Smith – My One and Only Love
Ethos – Agnosia

A Visit with Kelley Lane!

June 9, 2017
Kelley Lane Compendium

L-R: Stu, Kelley Lane, Mullins (a bonafide Stu selfie!)

Kelley Lane has played an integral part in the Northwest Georgia music scene since I started paying attention. Over the last decade he has focused his attention on the luthier arts with Lane Guitars. He is also known as a local singer/songwriter and a member of the Beatles tribute band, The Beatless. This Saturday the Schroeder’s Courtyard will host a Tom Petty themed benefit for DIGS, a group founded for the benefit of adults with developmental disorders. Kelley is also the biggest Tom Petty fan that I know so it’s only fitting that he would put together a band, The Broken Hearts, to headline the event. More information on the show is available on MullinsMania.com. It’s going to be a great time and we sure enjoyed visiting with Kelley! Here’s what we heard.

Cornbread Killers – The Right Thing
Babe’s Bayou – Wild Women
The Barbaric Yawps – Bring Me a Leaf
Matt Mason – I Run
Kelley Lane – Two Gunslingers (live)
Kelley Lane – You Never Had It So Good
Kelley Lane – The King’s Highway (live)
David Bell – Dumbing It Down
