A Visit with South of Heaven!

March 29, 2017
South of Heaven Compendium 2017

It never ceases to amaze Stu and I how five young guys can capture the essence of Southern Rock as well as South of Heaven does. Bristol Perry, Riley Couzzourt, Zach Everett, TJ Lyle, and Logan Tolbert have a natural chemistry that makes it look easy. It’s a must to catch them live and fully cranked, but I love the opportunity to hear them play stripped down and unplugged. That’s what we enjoyed on this week’s episode of The Northwest Georgia Music Hour. Here’s what we heard.

David E. Elliott – Muttie Doesn’t Like the Rain
Taylor Cromer & The Delta – Heart of Stone
Kira Annalise – The Bad Guy
South of Heaven – Too Far from the Track
South of Heaven – Gimme Back My Bullets (live)
South of Heaven – Rollin’ On (live)
South of Heaven – It Ain’t Mine (live)
South of Heaven – Too Far From the Track (live)

Craig Conway Compendium

As usual, we had a great time on this week’s episode of The Northwest Georgia Music Hour. The fact that it’s spring sure didn’t hurt, and the fact that we were joined by Craig Conway sealed the deal! Craig has earned a lot of fans around the area, as well as the opportunity for some quality gigs, like the opening spot on this Saturday’s Travis Meadows concert at the Historic DeSoto Theatre. Noah Stewart from Harbin Clinic also joined us with information about the benefit concert, and Bradley Hicks served as Craig’s bodyguard and pick bearer. It all made for tons of fun. Here’s what we heard.

Kira Annalise – A Thousand Reasons
Rome Shakespeare Festival Band – The Goblin Song
South of Heaven – Too Far From the Track
Craig Conway – Chillin’ at the Lake (live)
Travis Meadows – What We Ain’t Got
Craig Conway – Just Float (live)
Craig Conway – In Between Beers (live)
Craig Conway – Move On (live)
Travis Meadows – Grown Up Clothes

The goal is to bring people together to appreciate and enjoy what is now considered one of the world’s most respected art forms, the American blues. Stu and I had a great time visiting with Willie Mae Samuel, Ted Barnett, and Al Rowland. A visit with Old Burnt Turn Slick!

March 1, 2017

This week on the Northwest Georgia Music Hour we were joined by my all-time favorite songwriter and good friend, Old Burnt Turn Slick. Happy to remain in obscurity, Graham Duke has consistently released DIY recordings and handed them out to friends under different aliases for well over a decade. To a small group of friends he’s got more classic tracks than anyone. His style is completely his own and compromise for a wider audience is unheard of.

In order to share his music with others, I once attempted to create a one-disc sampler of my favorites. After one 80-minute CD was filled and I haven’t even scratched the surface, I realized that I wasn’t yet ready for that task. Maybe one day when I can carve out the time. Fortunately, there are three albums by Graham & Vann that are available and provide a glimpse into Duke’s world. The most recent is available on Stereotrash.com. Here’s what we heard.

The Donors – Dividing Line
Clay Broome – Waltz for Sarah
Shane West – One Big Heart
Graham & Vann – Snakes
Old Burnt Turn Slick – Sleeping Proof / Who Hated You (live)
Graham & Vann ft. Mistanamo Babine – Club Rabies
Old Burnt Turn Slick – Here’s a Lesson (live)
Graham & Vann – Birds
Old Burnt Turn Slick – Tat Shop (live)
Muletide Perkins Trio – Skate Rink
Graham & Vann – Fire & The Brimstone
